Construction begins on new Clinton-Peabody housing complex in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS – Crews broke ground Friday on the new Clinton-Peabody housing complex in St. Louis.
This marks the first phase of a long-planned redevelopment of St. Louis’ oldest public housing complex, which was built in 1942. City leaders say the redevelopment is needed to address aging infrastructure, vacant buildings and long-standing maintenance concerns.
The first phase calls for building 89 new housing units across three buildings at South 14th Street and Chouteau Avenue near downtown St. louis.
“Our vision is to create a safe, supportive and joyful community that promotes personal growth and belonging,” said Sal Martinez, St. Louis Housing Authority Commissioner. “We provide spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and thrive. We empower individuals and promote educational resources, wellness and recreation with the ultimate goal of creating a community where everyone flourishes and feels at home.”
Phase one is expected to be completed in the winter of 2028. Future phases are expected to bring some 350 apartments and homes to the area with a renovated community center, sports fields, and a park. The larger redevelopment is expected to unfold over the next decade.
